Journal History

Reinwardtia is a renowned scientific journal that has been published continuously since April 1950. It serves as a key international reference in biological sciences, with a particular focus on plant taxonomy, plant ecology, and ethnobotany. Over the years, the journal has significantly contributed to botanical research, providing a platform for scientists to share discoveries on plant classification, ecological interactions, and the relationship between plants and human culture.
Reinwardtia is the successor to the Bulletin du Jardin botanique de Buitenzorg, first published in 1898. This bulletin played a crucial role in advancing botanical knowledge during the colonial era, reflecting the research conducted at the Bogor Botanical Gardens. Initially, the journal was published in Dutch, English, French, and German, catering to a diverse European scientific audience. However, to align with modern scientific communication, it is now exclusively published in English.
The journal is named in honor of Prof. Caspar Georg Carl Reinwardt (5 June 1773 – 6 March 1854), a distinguished German botanist and naturalist. Renowned for his contributions to plant sciences, he was the founder of the Bogor Botanical Gardens and played a pivotal role in botanical exploration and classification in Southeast Asia.
As one of Indonesia’s longest-running botanical journals, Reinwardtia has witnessed and documented the growth of plant sciences in the country. It has been instrumental in shaping botanical research and fostering scientific discourse, particularly in plant taxonomy, ecology, and ethnobotany. With its rich legacy and commitment to advancing botanical knowledge, Reinwardtia remains an invaluable resource for researchers and academics worldwide.
